Question by Melissa: What is Drug Harm Reduction? And what does something called 'sex work' have to do with it?

I was attacked on an online blog/community when I said that I was unaware of what Drug Harm Reduction was. So I was directed to a website that kind of helped, not really, hence my question here. Also they said that they helped people with 'sex work'. What is that?

Harm reduction is a public policy to reduce the harm caused by drug use, without using tactics such as arresting drug users. For example, a city might provide a needle exchange so drug addicts can use clean needles, reducing the risks of getting diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. Some cities provide "safe injection sites" where addicts are also supervised to protect them from overdosing. See the link.

The term "sex worker" typically means prostitute. It sometimes may also refer to other workers in sex-related industries, such as exotic (especially lap) dancers. Harm reduction, in connection to prostitution, can mean reducing harm from drug use (as many prostitutes are addicts) or may mean improving safety for prostitutes, while allowing them to continue working.
