How can I get involved in the prevention of human trafficking and child sex tourism?

I'm a 21yr old college student studying criminal justice and I want to become an ICE agent specializing in human trafficking and child sex tourism.I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for what I could possibly do. I would really want to get involved with human trafficking from a law enforcement stance. I'm in the Boston area if that helps.

There are many organizations involved in this, though I'm not familiar with the law enforcement side of it. In October I went to an event coordinated by an anti-trafficking organization called Not for Sale, in which we lobbied Congress to renew the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA). Not for Sale works closely with ICE and other government agencies, and helps local nonprofits establish homes for trafficked children.

However, the anti-prostitution stance of many groups that fight human trafficking has some unintended consequences, and it would be best to choose any group you get involved in wisely. For example, in Cambodia the TVPA's anti-prostitution provision has been interpreted by police as a mandate to arrest all prostitutes, and there are reports that the Cambodian police tend to rob, rape, and assault the prostitutes after arresting them, which is counterproductive if the aim of the legislation is to protect women. Also, the anti-prostitution measures have caused USAID, a US government entity that provides economic assistance to people in other countries, to deny funding to humanitarian groups involved in helping prostitutes, since helping prostitutes is seen as condoning, or even promoting, prostitution. This means prostitutes are no longer being taught how to avoid AIDS and other diseases, are no longer being given condoms, and in some cases are no longer being given the food and shelter they need to survive. Like the Cambodian police's alleged abuses, this could also be counter-productive if it makes already marginalized women more vulnerable to human traffickers.

Another anti-trafficking group, the Prevent Human Trafficking Network, appears to have a more reasonable, less moralistic approach to trafficking prevention from what I've seen on its web site, but does not appear to have as many outreach projects as the more moralistic, religiously conservative Not for Sale Campaign, which makes it seem to me to be less effective while at the same time less likely to make mistakes. I guess sometimes you have to take the bad with the good.

Not for Sale is looking for state directors, and I don't think they have one yet for Massachusetts, if you're interested.
